Sleep Apnea, Snoring and TMJ Therapy
The lack of oxygen you experience at night can be due to a number of reasons. Let us help you find a solution.
Apnea means the “cessation of breathing.” This can happen in both adults and in children. These “cessation of breathing” events will typically happen at night and are often accompanied by other symptoms. In children, the lack of oxygen has a dramatic effect on the developing brain. Early studies are beginning to correlate sleep apnea in children with behavior disorders, poor cognitive development, and bed wetting to name a few.
This lack of oxygen can be due to a number of reasons. The more common cause is obstruction of the airway. This can be from jaw position or oral tissues (adenoids and tonsils). Some of the more common associated symptoms of sleep apnea include:
- Insomnia
- Loud Snoring (snoring is not normal in children)
- Headaches upon waking up
- Unintentionally falling asleep during the day
- Extreme drowsiness throughout the day
- Mouth breathing at rest
Treatment varies upon the age of the patient and the type of sleep problem they suffer from. The first step is to schedule a consultation with our office. Dr. McCord and Dr. McCoy will sit down with you and determine whether treatment is indicated for yourself or your child. Depending on your individual case, your treatment may include an oral device that we custom make for you.
TMJ Therapy
A significant number of the population suffers from severe headaches and chronic jaw pain. Sometimes this pain is the result of a condition called Temporo-Mandibular Joint Disorder (TMD). The temporomandibular joints (TMJs) connect your lower jawbone to your skull. These joints are used a lot throughout the day as you speak, chew, swallow, and yawn. Pain in these joints, in addition to being uncomfortable, can restrict movement.
Symptoms of TMD include:
- Locked jaw
- Limited ability to open the mouth
- A change in tooth alignment
- Muscle spasms in the jaw area
- Clicking or popping sounds in the jaw
- Frequent headaches or neck aches
- Pain, ringing, or stuffiness in the ears
- Pain in the jaw area
If you think that you may have TMD, it is imperative that you visit Adventure Orthodontics and have an exam.
*There is a fee associated with TMJ consultations.
